Cloud technology refers to the capability of treating compute and data as elastic, scalable resources typically billed using granular units such as seconds, minutes or gigabytes (in the case of data storage or transfer). This is in contrast to hosting or co-location offering in which the customer is explicitly paying for specific coarse-grained resources such as blades, hard disks, network bandwidth and so on.
